This Holiday: we are creating Unforgettable holiday Memories for young people aged 13 – 19 in two communities in Lagos!

So, if you’re looking for a fulfilling, engaging and safe holiday program for your children/wards this holiday, then this is something you won’t want them to miss… the YEDI SKILLZ Holiday Camp 2018 – December Edition

A research has shown that during the holidays, young people are most vulnerable. They are mostly not engaged in any structured or guided activity; and have time to be involved with negative peer pressure which increases the risk of engaging in dangerous activities.

In other to meaningfully engage them during this Christmas holiday, YEDI is organizing a SKILLZ HOLIDAY programme that runs for a week. The camps will be at two communities in Lagos (Abaranje and Ojokoro). At the camps, YEDI will use the Grassroot Soccer curriculum (GRS) that combines football drills, games and other physical activities, health education, and biomedical interventions such as HIV Counselling and Testing services.

The Camps will be anchored on these fundamental principles: the best learning is interactive learning (the camps provide young people with a safe place to play and learn); and it takes community commitment to achieve lasting change (camps are run in partnership with local schools and youth centres).

@@@@@@The camp runs for 8 hours per day for five days, with 2 health and wellness activities delivered each day and rounded off with fair-play soccer.

The participants are provided with 2 healthy meals (breakfast & Lunch).

Healthy habits: Training on the prevention of endemic diseases such as Malaria and HIV/AIDS

SKILLS: An opportunity to acquire soft skills, craft training for economic empowerment

LIFE-COPING SKILLS: Acquisition of life management skills using football and other physical activities…

— in a safe and interactive environment.

FUN AT THE CAMPS: Our participants will be empowered with an insightful, enlightening, educational and sporty activities to create for them a fun-packed and unforgettable experience; while providing them with all the required guidance and counselling as well as access to testing and referrals. Some of the activities include physical exercises, bed-net demonstrations, talent hunt and exhibition; quiz competition; and a football tournament aimed at advancing fair play.

GRADUATION CEREMONY: The final day of the camp features a graduation ceremony involving football tournament, award of prizes and celebration of outstanding participants with parents and community members.

We are grateful to our supporter and partners for making this December edition a reality. With their support, our participants will be meaningfully engaged throughout this Christmas holiday season.

Since 2013, we have organized Holiday Camps for young people in disadvantaged communities in Nigeria, providing them with a slew of sporty activities that include fair-play soccer, character & life-skills building experience, lasting friendships and a holiday they will never forget!

This Is Who We Are: YEDI is an adolescent health and life skills development organization that educates, empowers, and inspires youth and community transformation in Nigeria using sound, proven models that get results. YEDI also serves as the implementing partner for Grassroot Soccer in Nigeria.

Established in 2011, YEDI has sustained its programs and impact to reach over 140,000 young people, across four states in over 500 schools and community sites, with evidence-based interventions designed to build young people’s assets, facilitate their access to health services, and promote their adherence to healthy behaviours. The programs and projects adopted and implemented by YEDI focus on educating, empowering and inspiring the development of communities and individuals, especially children and youth.

And this is what we do:

  • We target Nigeria’s youth and communities and engaging them using innovative approaches including sports, technology, & skills.
  • We empower young people with basic and relevant life-coping skills
  • We teach adolescent girls sexual & reproductive health education, how to avoid teenage pregnancy, live healthy, avoid risk, etc.
  • We give them a platform to have important discussions about life, take guided steps to achieve their goals, stay strong when faced with challenges
  • We teach them how to protect themselves & others from diseases such as HIV/AIDS and Malaria using football and other games/physical activities.
  • We have benefited more than 137,000 young people in over 600 project sites in Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Ogun and Abuja
  • In summary, we build young people’s assets, facilitate their access to health services, and promote their adherence to healthy behaviours.

Since 2013, YEDI through the weeklong, non-residential SKILLZ Holiday Camps, has empowered over 16,000 adolescents who otherwise would have been idle during the long vacation – a period where youths are most vulnerable and exposed to negative peer pressure that increases their likelihood of engaging in risky activities.
